Overview

Subir was originally a portion of Laponia, breaking away during a series of invasions and rebellions from Ruslav in the east and the land that would become Scythia to the south. Subir is a lush land with rolling hills, deep forests, and river valleys. It shares much of both its geography and culture with Sylvanator. It began as a border region for Sylvanator, where half-fae born in the country would settle due to the restrictions on citizenship. Gael'brah from Sylvanator, mostly families following their offspring, but also others looking for open space and more freedoms came with them as well. This produced a society similar to Sylvanator, but discarding more oppressive social customs for the less restrained aspects of their nature.

Religions

Originally being a part of Laponia, there is a strong fae influence, with nature worship being common. Veneration of the fae is not unheard of. With the influx of individuals from Sylvanator and Canid from the snow fields of Ruslav, these cultures and ideologies have been mixed into the whole, forming a distinct, highly naturally focused, way of life. Of note, Paleteth are very well treated here, much as though they are a member of the Shide race that they are descended from.

Foreign Relations

Subir attempts to maintain strong trade and diplomatic ties with other countries, preferring to position itself as an independent nation. In actuality, they receive a great deal of support from Sylvanator, though this is ill acknowledged in diplomatic circles.

Scythia is considered hostile and the country maintains an active war footing along the river that divides the two nations, though Subir is often reluctant to do more than retain or reclaim their own territory.

Ruslav is not trusted, despite a lack of conflict in recent or even modern times. This extends to culture and goods, though with the diminished status and reach of their empire, only ambitious or foolish traders seek to offer goods from Ruslav in Subir.

Early History

National History

When war broke out with Ruslav, the majority population of Gael'brah remained in Subir, alongside Gael'brah refugees fleeing from the south, mounting an ultimately unsuccessful defense. The military of Laponia fell back to defend the north, holding ground in modern Laponia.

The people of Subir labored under occupation, primarily as a supplier of food, for some time. A trade port, Obirsk, was constructed at the mouth of the Ob river, providing a means for trade with the world at large.

Military advances on Sylvanator inspired that country to use Subir as a buffer state against Ruslav invasion. To this end, they supported a rebellion which successfully drove Ruslav troops and influence from what would become modern Subir. This included the trade port of Obirsk, which would trade hands between Subir and Scythia several times during the conflict and would become a major point of contention even into the modern era. The port is currently under the control of Subir, with the last major conflict and change of ownership being some 70 years ago.
